The Yankees season is over, but decisions to build the 2027 roster have already started.

One of the positions that can undergo major changes is second base, especially since Jazz Chisholm Jr. will come to free agency and its continuity in New York is not guaranteed.

Within the roster itself there is an alternative that perhaps did not seem obvious when the Yankees acquired it during the season: Luis García Jr.

Garcia spent most of 2026 playing in first base, but he has extensive experience as second baseman and the Yankees do not rule out returning him to that position for the next season.

Luis García Jr. reappears as an option for second base

Aaron Boone recently acknowledged that Garcia's experience as an infielder could be used again in the future.

The Venezuelan reached the Major Leagues as a player in the middle of the draw and during his years with Washington he accumulated hundreds of games at second base.

Before establishing himself as first baseman in 2026, Garcia had been the Nationals' usual second baseman for several seasons.

That past could now become an important tool for the Yankees.

New York will have to rearrange different parts of its roster and use Garcia in the second would open up possibilities in other positions.

García has extensive experience in the position

Before starting to play regularly in first base, Garcia accumulated more than 500 games as second base in the Major Leagues.

He also has shortstop experience.

That means an eventual change would not represent learning a whole new position.

The question will be whether he can recover the defensive level necessary to play it daily in a team with championship aspirations.

His defense in the second had better seasons than others.

During 2025, some defensive metrics reflected a considerable drop in performance, one of the reasons Washington ended up using it primarily in first base during 2026.

That is why any movement back to the middle of the frame would have to be accompanied by specific work during the winter.

Aaron Boone believes that there is still defensive capacity

The Yankees do not seem to have discarded the idea from their previous defensive numbers.

Boone considers that there is still potential in Garcia as a draw player.

The coaching staff has also been satisfied with some of their tools.

Dan Fiorito, in charge of the work with the infielders, has highlighted García's arm, his hands and his ability to control the plays when the ball reaches him.

During the final stretch of the season it was already possible to observe the player taking shots not only in the First Division, but also in the Second and Third Base.

Part of that work is part of the usual infielders preparation, but also keeps different possibilities open for 2027.

The future of jazz chisholm can speed up the decision

The jazz situation Chisholm Jr. will be one of the main themes of winter.

Jazz finished his contract and can become a free agent.

The Yankees will have to decide how much they are willing to invest to keep it and what direction they want to take at second base.

His 2026 season had ups and downs and ended in a complicated way in the postseason.

That does not mean that New York has decided to let it go, but it does force the organization to study alternatives.

One of them could already be inside the clubhouse.

If Garcia shows that he can handle second base defensively, the Yankees would have an internal solution without having to immediately acquire another player for that position.

García's bat makes the possibility attractive

The great reason to keep Luis García Jr. inside the lineup is his offense.

The left-handed batter finished the 2026 regular season with 30 home runs and 92 runs between Washington and New York.

recorded average of .277, on-base percentage of .309 and slugging of .521.

After reaching the Yankees, he played 43 games, hit seven home runs and produced 16 runs.

His overall production decreased from the extraordinary start he had with Washington, but he continued to offer contact and power from the left side.

In addition, it is under contractual control of the equipment by 2027.

That makes it an especially important piece for the planning of the next roster.

Moving it to second could solve several problems at the same time

The possible change of position should not be analyzed only by thinking of the second base.

You can also completely modify the lineup distribution.

Ben Rice needs turns.

Giancarlo Stanton continues to occupy an important part of the space available for the designated hitter.

Aaron Judge will probably need to receive designated days to reduce the physical load for a full season.

If Garcia remains exclusively in first base, the Yankees will have less flexibility to accommodate all those hitters.

If he can play second, Boone would have many more combinations available.

Ben Rice could benefit directly

Rice is one of the most important offensive pieces that the Yankees should consider by 2027.

During the season he showed enough power to regularly occupy an important place within the lineup.

The first base is one of its natural positions.

That is why using García in the Second Division would allow Rice to place in the First Division without removing García's bat from the lineup.

Depending on the rival starter, Boone could then alternate different players in the First Division and as a designated hitter.

The possibility would greatly increase the team's offensive flexibility.

The third base is also not fully defined

Another element that the organization will have to evaluate is the third base.

Ryan McMahon did not end up offering the offensive impact that the Yankees expected and his position within the roster can also be part of the winter discussions.

Garcia has begun to take rolls in third, although that position does not currently represent his main experience.

The Yankees don't necessarily have to make him a starter there.

But the more positions you can cover, the higher your value for Boone.

In a 162-game season, versatility allows players to rest, cover injuries and modify the lineup depending on the matchups.

The defense will be the big question

García's bat does not generate too many questions.

The defense does.

During his last full season as second base his metrics were among the weakest of his career.

That is why the Yankees will have to determine if there really is an opportunity to improve their mobility and reach.

A possible approach during the winter could include physical work to maintain greater agility and reduce some of the weight you added when the transition to first base began.

Playing second requires different moves.

Greater side range.

Turns around the pad.

fast transfers.

and ability to complete double killings under pressure.

Garcia knows those moves, but he would have to show that he can still run them at the level that New York needs.

The Yankees need to improve their defense

The elimination against Tampa Bay once again demonstrated the importance of the fundamentals.

The Yankees made major defensive mistakes during the ALDS and the Rays seized those opportunities.

That is why any decision for 2027 should consider more than just offensive production.

New York needs to build a defense capable of consistently converting routine outs.

If Garcia is going to become second baseman again, the team will need to be convinced that the move will not weaken that part of the roster.

Los Yankistas: an interesting option, but not automatic

from the perspective of Los Yankistas, using Luis García Jr. in second base makes a lot of sense from the point of view of construction of the roster.

Allows you to keep your bat.

Release the first base for Ben Rice.

It offers greater flexibility with the designated hitter position.

And it reduces the urgency of immediately looking for a second base on the market if Jazz Chisholm Jr. does not return.

But it should not be done simply because Garcia played there previously.

The Yankees need to first check that they can consistently defend the position.

After what happened defensively during the postseason, it would not make sense to solve an offensive problem by creating another problem with the glove.

Winter will determine the next inner box

The second base will be only one piece inside a much larger puzzle.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. can leave.

Ryan McMahon raises questions in the third.

Ben Rice needs a permanent place.

Giancarlo Stanton will continue to condition the position of designated hitter.

And the Yankees want to find ways to reduce the physical burden on Aaron Judge.

In the midst of all these decisions, Luis García Jr.

When he arrived in New York, he was seen mainly as an offensive solution for first baseman and the position of designated.

Now it could become something different.

a second base.

A versatile piece.

And possibly one of the keys to rearrange the Yankees inner box in 2027.
