The New York Yankees seemed headed for a loss for much of the night, but they reacted in time and ended up starring in a 6-4 comeback over the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium.

New York reached the bottom of the sixth inning losing 4-0 and had been practically completely limited by the Pitching of Tampa Bay. The story changed over the last three episodes, when Austin Wells started the reaction and George Lombard Jr. ended up becoming the main figure of an offensive that woke up when he needed it most.

The Yankees scored a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to complete the comeback and win three of the four games of the series against the Eastern Champion of the American League.

Austin Wells lit an offensive that couldn't find answers

During the first five innings, the Yankees could hardly do damage against starter Ian Seymour. The Tampa Bay left-hander allowed only one hit and kept New York off the score before handing the ball to the bullpen.

By that time, the Rays had already built a four-run lead. Tampa Bay scored twice in the third inning, added another run in the fifth inning and widened the score to 4-0 in the sixth.

The Yankees reaction began immediately after. Austin Wells opened the bottom of the sixth facing Jake Woodford and hit a solo homer in center.

Wells' 14th home run of the season represented New York's first race and changed the tone of a game that until then had been controlled by Tampa Bay.

George Lombard Jr. completely changed the match

The offensive returned with greater force in the seventh inning. Ben Rice opened the episode by negotiating a baseball and Amed Rosario advanced it with a ride before George Lombard Jr. hit a deep double in left field.

Rice scored from second and reduced the difference to 4-2. Shortly after, Lombard advanced to third with an uncontrolled pitch and ended up crossing the plate with another Wild Pitch to put the Yankees at only one run.

New York continued to push. Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells were scored and, after a play in which Volpe was retired at the plate, Paul Goldschmidt hit a single to center field that allowed Wells to score and tied the match 4-4.

The match had completely changed. In a matter of two inputs, the Yankees had erased a disadvantage that seemed comfortable for the Rays.

Lombard Jr. completed the comeback with the decisive hit

The definition came in the eighth inning. With two outs, Amed Rosario hit a single to the center and put Lombard Jr. again in an important situation.

The young shortstop replied again.

Lombard punished Steven Matz with a two-run left field home run that put New York up 6-4 and unleashed the celebration at Yankee Stadium.

It was his seventh homer of the season and completed a night in which he finished with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored. After producing a race with his double in the seventh, Lombard appeared again a inning afterwards to connect the hit that definitely inclined the match.

Cam Schlittler had a short exit before the reaction

Cam Schlittler made a shorter opening than usual. The right-hander worked three innings, allowed three hits and two runs—one of them clean—gold two walks and struck out five batters.

Schlittler needed 70 pitches to complete his three episodes before the Yankees started using the bullpen.

Michael Fulmer allowed a run in one-third inning, while Tim Hill worked two-thirds without scoring. Luis Gil pitched two episodes and allowed a dirty run after making a mistake on a defensive play.

Bradley Hanner was in charge of the last five outs. The right-hander threw a two-thirds inning without allowing runs and ended up crediting the victory after the offense took the lead in the eighth.

The Yankees closed the series with a comeback of character

Beyond the result, the way the victory arrived left a positive signal in the final stretch of the regular season. New York was down 4-0, made two mistakes and did not produce during the first five innings, but found a way to completely change the match.

Austin Wells made the first shot with his home run, Paul Goldschmidt contributed two hits and produced the tie run, while Lombard Jr. ended up carrying the biggest offensive role.

The Yankees finished with seven hits against Nine from Tampa Bay, but took advantage of their opportunities during the final innings and scored six consecutive runs without receiving a response.

With the victory, New York improved its record to 92-67 and closed the series against Tampa Bay, winning three out of four games. Now the Yankees continue their preparation for the postseason with just a few remaining games on the regular schedule.
